Sore throat A painkiller that you buy, such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, will give you temporary relief from a sore throat. Whether the pain is the result of excessive shouting on the goal line, an early cold symptom, or the result of working in a central heating office where the air is dry, the quickest way to soothe it is with throat rinses, herbal teas, or honey. Here are some effective combinations.
Rinse throat
Nothing surpasses saltwater for quick and effective relief, the old throat rinse. The salt acts as a mild antiseptic and draws water from the throat’s mucous membranes, which helps remove slime. Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a pinch of warm water (use the warmest you can handle), gargle and spit it out. If it helps, repeat this every hour.

For a more spicy throat rinse, add 10 – 20 drops of Tabasco sauce to a glass of water. Tabasco is made from paprika to act like capsaicin and has antiviral properties. The healing power of honey
Honey has long been used as a remedy for sore throats. It has antibacterial properties, which can help speed healing. It also acts as a hypertonic osmotic solution, which means it draws water out of inflamed tissue, which reduces swelling and discomfort. Add 2 or 3 teaspoons of hot water or herbal tea.
Hot lemon juice with honey can also relieve pain. Mix the juice of half a lemon with hot water and add two teaspoons of honey. You can add one or two teaspoons of brandy, whiskey, or port to this mixture because of the taste and hot grog, which causes mild numbness.
Black currants are used to make another popular and soothing hot drink. The easiest way to make a throat rinse from black currants is to dissolve a concentrate such as Ribena in hot water and drink it slowly.
Treat sore throat with herbal teas

Supplement helpers
Take 1000 mg of vitamin C three times a day. Whether your sore throat is caused by a cold, flu, or streptococcal bacteria, this vitamin will help strengthen the immune system and prevent infection. Reduce the dose if diarrhea occurs.
Take 200 mg of echinacea capsules four times a day. The antibacterial and antiviral properties of these medicinal plants will speed healing. Make sure the echinacea you buy is standardized to contain 3.5% echinacoside.

- Take one lozenge of zinc every three to four hours until your sore throat passes but never longer than five days. One study found that people who sucked lozenges containing approximately 13 mg of zinc every two hours were released from viral inflammation three to four days earlier than those who did not. But too much zinc can actually damage your immune system, so you shouldn’t take lozenges for long periods of time. The safe upper limit for long-term use of zinc supplements is 25 mg per day.
Could it be acid reflux?
One of the causes of sore throat is acid reflux. If strong stomach acid returns mostly to your throat while you sleep, you will wake up with something that acts like a sore throat. To prevent this, try raising the headboard on wooden blocks or several old telephone directories.
